Laying the
Groundwork for Change
A major concern in the public school system is to help struggling learners progress in the curriculum. Parents and staff can become very frustrated when a child falls behind in learning to read, write, or do math.
Response to Intervention is essential to making accurate decisions about the effectiveness of general and remedial instruction. RtI promotes the understanding that how well a subject is taught gauges how well the children will learn. In the purest form, RtI is simply about personalizing information for individual students to promote their academic success. The intent of the process is to decrease the number of "curriculum casualties" by ensuring that all students are given high-quality instruction with fidelity.
It is an opportunity for educators to resolve students' learning difficulties by primarily focusing on student needs and not on special education eligibility decisions. RtI is about what will be done rather than where it will be done, and how to intervene as opposed towho will do the intervention.
